--- JOEY MACK REPEATS AS 2008 O'REILLY MSRA CHAMPION
Benton, Missouri based Joey Mack Racing captured their second consecutive O'Reilly MSRA series title. The race team picked up the championship, and remained the only points champion in the series two year history. Mack narrowly edged fellow series competitor Jeff Floyd, winning by 21 points, as Floyd challenged Mack for the second consecutive year until the last lap of the last feature.
Mack stated, "Although I didn't have the feature win success this year that I did last, we were extremely consistent and our package is real reliable. When you have guys there every week like Floyd, and guys running and winning multiple races like Wendell Wallace, Jack Sullivan, Kyle Beard, and Ray Moore, it makes picking up a feature win tough. We were in contention almost every night, the wins just didn't fall our way." Mack was correct in his statement of consistency, as he finished in the top 5 in over half of the O'Reilly MSRA races, and had a season- worst finish of 11th.
Considering Joey started the season coming off a back surgery, it makes his feat even more impressive. Series co-owner Cary Jones stated, "for the season opener at Little Rock, Joey told me that since he was coming off an injury, he might just turn a lap in the heat, take a provisional for the feature, and ride around and collect points. That lasted about thirty seconds. Before we knew it, he was up on the wheel riding around on a hooked up track, put the car on the pole, and then finished second in the feature. It just shows what a dedicated racer he is."
Mack is not only a dedicated racer, but dedicated to the O'Reilly MSRA. He and Jeff Floyd are the only two individuals to run every race in the series two year history. This has taken him east to Mississippi, west to Oklahoma, south near the Texas border at Texarkana, and to the north in his home state of Missouri. Mack stated the travel was worth the effort, adding, "the plan for the series is to try and get two nights of racing each weekend, either at the same track or close by. With diesel what it cost this year, I don't know if we could have raced a series any other way." Mack continued, "The two nights also let's you get out on the road with your family. My wife Carrie, daughter Laurel, and Mom and Dad are able to come and help out or support me quite a bit."
Series co-owner Chris Ellis is excited to have Joey represent MSRA. "When you think of late model racing in this part of the country, you may think of Moyer, Frye, or Wallace. But we feel like we are developing the next generation. When Joey started with us two years ago, he was still in his late twenties. Kyle Beard picked up the COMP Cams Challenge by winning four of our races this year, and he is only twenty-two. Billy Moyer, Jr., Jordan Jones, and Jeff Wells, Jr. all finished in the Top 10 in points and are all twenty years old or younger." Ellis continued, "Jon Kirby captured the Kuntz and Company Rookie of the Year, and him pairing up with Dewaine Hottinger has really accelerated his program. Joey is a great young champion, but has enough experience that he represents the series well."
